Chicago Quote of the Day

I miss everything about Chicago, except January and February.

- Gary Cole

Baseball Already....?

The Super Bowl hasn't even happened yet, and Chicagoans are already looking to the upcoming 2008 Chicago baseball season. With the completion of the Cubs Convention and Soxfest, there are the usual high hopes for the baseball fans of the windy city. Along with the high hopes come the friendly (and some times not so) feud between the north sider Cubs fans and the south sider Sox fans. White Sox fans hate the yuppie Cubs, all the while being jealous of the Wrigley Field aura. Cubs fans hate the blue collar White Sox, all the while being jealous of that 2005 championship season.

Despite all the differences between Cubs and Sox fans, the whole city is already getting excited for the upcoming season. The Sox acquired Octavio Dotel from the Kansas City Royals to beef up their bullpen, while Alexei Ramirez also signed a four year deal. The talk of the north side has surrounded the prized pick-up Kosuke Fukudome and the starting role of Felix Pie. An outfield consisting of Alfonso Soriano in left, Felix Pie in center, and Kosuke Fukudome in right will be tough to contend with. Even tougher when it comes their respective turns in the batting order. Alfonso Soriano will hopefully stay healthy for the duration of the 2008 season and shake off some of the rocky performances (and atrocious post-season) of 2007. Felix Pie is still considered up-and-coming, and has much to learn in the batters box. The untested part of this outfield alliance is Fukudome. He has a great reputation, and all the Cubs fans can hope for is that he comes even close to meeting those expectations.

With all said, I think the Chicago Cubs have made more positive steps in setting themselves up for a stellar 2008 season. For this, I will make the bold claim that the Chicago Cubs will win both Windy City Classics and finish with a better record than the Chicago White Sox. You can hold me to it...

Blue Man Group Worldwide

You can see the Blue Man Group in just about every major city around the world. Before that was possible, you could see this sensation in only a couple cities, including Chicago. At the Briar Street Theatre on Halsted St in Chicago's North Side, you can see the long time home of the Blue Crew. They have been through a few different takes on their own performance, but there are always the mainstays. Intense percussion, black lights, and comedic stunts. I would caution anyone with Epilepsy to stay away from the program, as many strobe lights are in use (this may actually be a selling point to certain folks). I would absolutely recommend going to see the Blue Man Group once, but once you have seen it, thats about it. They don't have a long set list they can cycle through, it is pretty much the same tube banging, head-in-a-jello-mold show. Not that a person's head in a jello mold can be 'ordinary' or 'standard' compared to the norm, but seriously how many times can you see it?

Takeaways too little, too late for Bears defense in '07

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – While the Bears defense suffered through a disappointing 2007 season, plummeting in the NFL rankings from fifth in 2006 to 28th, the unit improved late in the year.

From Weeks 10 through 17, the Bears forced 20 takeaways, tied for the third most in the NFL during that span. The Bears turned those 20 takeaways into 51 points. For the season, the Bears forced 33 takeaways, the eighth most in the NFL, converting them into 64 points.

Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher led the Bears with a career-high five interceptions in 2007.
In 2006, the Bears led the NFL with 143 points off of 44 takeaways. The Bears are one of only four teams to finish in the top 10 in the NFL in takeaways in each of the past three seasons after registering sixth in 2005 with 34. Cincinnati, Detroit and Minnesota are the others.

Since Lovie Smith became Bears coach in 2004, Chicago ranks second in the NFL with 140 takeaways. During that time the Bears lead the league in opponent fumble recoveries (59) and rank second in interceptions (81).

The Bears defense forced a league-high 65 three-and-out drives on 214 series during the 2007 regular season. The Bears were the only team in the NFL to force the opposition into a three-and-out drive over 30 percent of the time (30.4) this season. The average number of three-and-out drives per NFL team in 2007 was 41 with the next closest team to the Bears, the New York Giants, forcing 51 three-and-out drives. The average percentage of three-and-out drives forced in the NFL was 22.1.

The 65 three-and-out drives by the Bears defense were the most forced by a team since the 1999 Baltimore Ravens had 75. The Bears have finished in the top five in number of three-and-out drives forced in each of the four years under the tutelage of Smith. They have also finished in the top 10 in three-and-out drive percentage each season since 2004. During Smith’s tenure, Chicago leads the NFL in number of three-and-out drives forced (234) and percent of three-and-out drives per defensive series (27.8).

For the third straight season the Bears defense finished second in the NFL in third down conversions. Opposing offenses converted on third downs just 32.7 percent of the time in 2007 (73 of 223) against the Bears. In 2006, Chicago’s defense allowed the opposition to convert on third downs just 31 percent of the time (74 of 239) and 31.9 percent of the time in 2005 (76 of 238). In 2004, the Monsters of the Midway led the NFL in the category allowing just a 30.5 percent conversion rate on third downs (67 of 220).

All four of those seasons have come under the tutelage of Smith, after the team ranked 21st in the NFL in third down defense a year before his arrival (84 of 213; 39.4 percent). Under Smith’s guidance, Chicago leads the NFL in third-down defense, as the opposition has been successful just 31.5-percent of the time on third-down opportunities over the last four seasons.

According to STATS LLC, the Bears defense leads the NFL in stuffs - a tackle of a rusher for negative yards - since 2004 with 230. Those stuffs have resulted in 545 yards in losses, also tops in the NFL. This season the Monsters of the Midway finished tied for fourth in the NFL with 53 stuffs for 122 yards in losses.

In the second half of the 2007 regular season, the Bears defense picked off 11 passes, tied for fifth most in the NFL. For the season Chicago had 16 interceptions (tied for 17th in the NFL). Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher led the team in 2007 with a career-high five interceptions with four of them coming in the final five contests of the regular season.

Cornerback Charles Tillman picked off three passes and is now tied with counterpart Nate Vasher for the most career interceptions by active Bears with 17. All three of Tillman’s interceptions in 2007 came in the final six weeks of the season. Tillman recorded a pick in back-to-back contests in Weeks 12 (vs. Denver) and 13 (vs. the Giants) and added one in the season finale versus New Orleans.

Vasher returned in Week 15 at Minnesota (12/17) after missing the previous 10 games due to an injury to record his only interception of the season. He missed 12 contests on the year with a groin injury.

Safety Mike Brown started off 2007 with the 15th pick of his career in the Bears season opener at San Diego (9/9) before leaving the game with a season-ending knee injury. Safety Brandon McGown added two interceptions, the first of which was the 277th of Packers quarterback Brett Favre’s career, tying an NFL record at the time.

Safety Danieal Manning also added two interceptions for the second straight season, while defensive end Alex Brown and safety Adam Archuleta added one each.

During the 2007 season, the Bears red zone defense finished third in the NFL in opponent scoring efficiency after allowing opposing teams to score just 75 percent of the time (39 scores on 52 drives), trailing only San Diego (73.0 percent; 27 scores on 37 drives) and New England (73.2 percent; 30 on 41).

Chicago’s defense also allowed an average of 4.33 points per red zone drive, third lowest in the league this season behind Philadelphia (3.82) and Buffalo (4.11). Chicago finished 15th in red zone touchdown efficiency (51.9 percent, 27 TDs).

In four seasons under Smith, the Bears defense ranks second in both red zone scoring efficiency (75.3 percent, 140 scores on 186 drives) and red zone touchdown efficiency (44.1 percent, 82 TDs).

Kenny Chesney Looking to Pack Soldier Field

Kenny Chesney is embarking on a huge mega-venue concert tour this summer. To name a few: Pittsburgh's Heinz Field, Atlanta's Turner Field, Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field, Foxboro's Gillette Stadium, and our very own Soldier Field. Kenny Chesney, known for many things including his 4 month marriage to actress Renee Zellweger, is best known for his country music. He has won CMT Male Video of the Year, CMA Entertainer of the Year, AMA Entertainer of the Year, ACM Triple Crown, and a CMA Album of the Year for When The Sun Goes Down. So it is no wonder that this singer/song writer is selling out NFL stadiums across the country. Kenny Chesney tour tickets sell out as fast as the best of them, so stay on top of the Soldier Field on sale dates or you will have to watch him on TV instead of being there with 60,000 other fans at the June 21st, 2008 concert.

Feel Like Rockin Out to Bon Jovi?

Well, wish granted. This somehow unbreakable artist continues his decades long run with a stint of 3 Chicago shows at the United Center. As always Bon Jovi tickets are hard to come by, although having three shows should allow you to get the seats you want at what you are willing to pay. Bon Jovi regularly tours, and always makes it to Chicago. Putting on 3 shows gives you some indication of how popular he still is, and an idea of how much Chicago keeps "Livin' On a Prayer." Cheesy, I know, but when it comes to writing Bon Jovi articles, cheesy is expected.

CHICAGO CUBS TICKETS

It's Cold Out There!

After a very unusual warm spell early in January 2008, we have dropped below zero in consecutive days. This is typically the coldest part of the winter, January 10 - January 20, but I think we can expect a frigid remainder of this season. With well below zero wind chills, it is best to bundle up and stay indoors as much as possible. Martin Luther King day couldn't have come at a better time for those fortunate enough to have the day off of work.

Pain and the Chicago Bulls

There is a lot of talk surrounding the Chicago Bulls these days, and none of it is positive. Between Ben Wallace and Joakim Noah's tiffs and the rest of the Bulls just plain ineffective, it is no wonder we are in the position we are. With mutiny in the ranks, the Chicago Bulls need to pull it together. They need to stop fighting amongst each other and just practice. The alternative... start over. Dissect the team, make some trades, get a real leader in there to inspire, and hopefully in time, win.

Disney On Ice: High School Musical

Kids begging you to take them to a show? You know they have been talking about High School Musical. It is the hottest sensation in years, with smash hits in the premier and the sequel. The next big thing for High School Musical is their Disney on Ice tour, which is coming to Chicago's United Center this February. With plenty of show dates, tickets shouldn't be an issue, but there aren't always good seats available at the box office. If you are planning on going to one of these shows, I would recommend planning in advance and getting your Disney On Ice tickets early. These shows are always really popular, and you know your kids will love it.

Cirque Du Soleil Circling Back to Chicago

If you have been hiding under a rock for the last 10 years, then the name Cirque Du Soleil will have no meaning to you. Well, Cirque Du Soleil Kooza will be coming to Chicago this summer and you should get experienced. This Cirque troop are unparalleled, and have amazed crowds not only around the country, but around the world. So get your Cirque Du Soliel tickets before they sell out, because their shows usually do. Even if you have seen other Cirque shows before, each is unique enough to merit another go.

No Smoking in the New Year

Time is Up! Well... many thought the day would never come, myself included. You are no longer allowed to smoke in any public place in the state of Illinois. As with all new laws, the fuzz are on the scene right out the gates. If you were fortunate enough to be out at the bars on New Years Eve, there were undercover police just waiting for the ball to drop, although not to ring in the new year, but to write you a ticket for smoking in the bar. You could smoke until the ball hit the floor, until the count hit 1, until... until.... You get the point. For many, this is a long time coming. Now non-smokers can enjoy a Saturday night out in Chicago without coming home smelling like a smokers lounge. Heck, even pregnant women can enjoy the bar scene without risking the health of the yet unborn. But what about the smokers? They get to enjoy the year-round weather of our beloved city. Brave the cold, stay strong through the heat. Will it stop people from smoking? Some... People like to smoke, and why not? They are addicted. The price of a pack of cigarettes is more likely to impact people's habits, but the combination will help social smokers stop completely, and make the hard-core brave the conditions. All in all, it passed, get used to it, whichever side of the fence you are on.

Hester Ever After

Orton + Urlacher + Hester = Bears Victory. The Chicago Bears string together two wins in a row for the first time this season against the New Orleans Saints, crushing their post-season hopes. As the re-match of last years NFC Championship game began, sentimental feelings of last years Super Bowl appearance were abound. They played with the fury of last year, with the usual, and not so usual, suspect participating. Urlacher had a rough year, but has shown he still has the goods over the last few weeks with key interceptions and overall defensive prowess. Kyle Orton started his third game in a row, and managed to do what Rex Grossman and Brian Griese could not, complete passes and string two wins together. Oh, and then there is that guy... what's his name? oh, yeah, Devin Hester. Two touchdowns today, one punt return and one reception, were the game breakers. Averaging over 40 yards per touchdown, when he makes the play- its one for the highlight reel. Bears fans are hoping that ending the season hot will keep spirits high in the off season, and that the Chicago Bears will come back next year and fulfill the prophecies left unmet.
